What do Our Staff Think About Working at the Office of Health Review

Our staff expressed a desire to put their thoughts about working at the Office of Health Review on our website. So this is what some of our staff had to say.

“The people here are fantastic, everyone is really supportive and we all work together as a team. The positive team environment is fantastic for brain storming and bouncing ideas off each other, you never feel as if you are on your own. Being able to close a complaint is really rewarding, especially knowing that you may have helped someone come to terms with a grievance they had. The job is challenging but also very fulfilling and over time my knowledge has multiplied.”

“I enjoy the nature of the work. It is a combination of problem solving and objectivity, caring about people, having a commitment to equity, natural justice and demonstrating these principles using a range of skills. You are accountable for your work and for your decisions. The standard is a high one, which service providers and complainants alike have the right to expect. The working environment is a supportive one with an excellent team of people from different backgrounds who contribute so much and do so willingly. Including cakes and chocolate frogs.”

“Being a mediator/conciliator between the complainant and the service provider is extremely rewarding. No matter what the outcome it is great to know that you have helped people sort out their grievances. When I first started at OHR I saw my position as just another job, but now I really enjoy what I do. The team is exceptionally supportive and with all the external training I have done and experience I have gained, I am really enjoying my career in mediation and conciliation.”

“Pros: interesting work, great team, varied role.
Cons: often distressing work, high workload.”

“What I enjoy most about working at the OHR is the supportive team environment. And facilitating impartial complaints resolution has given me opportunities to develop and advance my conciliation, investigation and negotiation skills.”

“Working at the OHR is challenging and rewarding. Dealing with complaints is difficult but knowing that you are making a difference makes it worthwhile.”

Important Note for Potential Applicants Applying for a Position with the Office of Health Review

The Office of Health Review is an independent statutory authority established to inquire into and resolve health and disability complaints. A crucial element of the work undertaken by this Office is our independence from both health and disability service providers. Potential candidates, and indeed other stakeholders, should be reassured of this independence.

The Office of Health Review is not part of the Department of Health. However, the Department of Health provides various administrative and support services to this Office by way of a service agreement. This includes organising certain administrative aspects of the recruitment and selection process, including placing advertisements and the acceptance and processing of applications.

Ultimately, responsibility for the recruitment and selection of staff rests with the Director of the Office of Health Review.
